I may attend around 5-10 meetings a week and I only work part time. Special education teachers, administrators, and a few others will attend these meetings as well. We are VERY used to the process and the terminology. That being said, we constantly have to remind ourselves that parents are often not used to any of it. We went to school for years to learn this, and we've been living it out in our careers. It's second nature to many of us. Parents often come in understanding very little. I try to be conscious of explaining what we are doing to the parents. However, it's a lot of information that gets thrown out very quickly.
I want to know how many of the readers feel that you understood what transpired in the meetings you attended? Did you feel rushed? Did you feel supported? Share your comments and please vote in the poll. I'll leave it open through January and then discuss the results.

I have 2 children who are currently in CPS schools at the High School level, and both have an IEP, Before coming to High School, I felt the IEP meetings were conducted in a manner that was parent friendly, and with lingo that was understandable to the parents. I never felt that I was rushed out. Now that I have attended the High School IEP meetings I have been made to feel different though. I however have had to ask that we either schedule another meeting or do not leave and will not sign if I feel that something is missing or not addressed correctly. I strongly advocate for special ed, and as a parent of children with special education needs it really upsets me when sometimes parents and students are shortchanged and not given all the services they need and the law says they are to receive. Parents you are your childs best advocate.
It was attended once a IEP meeting, i felt it's good choice to make out the plan of action for my child by sitting along with their teachers. i was very much impressed with school as they are taking care of my child more than me and also remembered about my responsibilities.
Honestly, if you're talking about my first IEP meeting, way back in 2005, I had no idea what was going on, and was even more surprised that my son was found eligible for services.
By the way, does your district (does any district) have a policy of telling the parents after the FIRST IEP meeting -- I know this might be confusing for you. If you have any questions about what we discussed, or when you get the IEP, feel free to call so and so?
I think that IPE meeting is a friendly meeeting that helps parents to understand in a manner.. but parents know well about their child..
I have 2 daughters.I am Lawyer. My elder daughter wants to be a lawyer. But I think she can be good software engineer. She is scholar and top ranker in school.Your article has given me insight to understand more by attending such meetings!
I personally like to participate in those types of meetings and like to contribute a bit of my thoughts as well, but when we sit over meeting we just disappoint very much due to most of those meetings just look like promoting their activities, publicity etc.. but they didn't look into the other members thoughts or ideas, even they invite them.
